She’s the man!
Wednesday, May 31st, 2006Just watched this movie titled ‘She’s the man’ last night. It was totally hilarious! The movie stars Amanda Bynes as Viola who is this teenage girl all set out to prove that she can be as good a soccer player as any guy. It might sound like a really ditsy and bimbo-tic thing to do but it is actually very enduring to see her try so hard to be like a man. I laughed all through the movie as I witness her try to walk like a man, talk like a man, spit like a man, play soccer like a man and flirt like a man!
I can relate very well to her character as I used to be very headstrong and tomboyish too (actually I still am a little). I like to challenge guys and out-rightly claim that girls can do whatever guys declare they can do better!
I remember the time I backed out from taking salsa dancing classes with my girlfriends when I discovered that the male leads and the female follows! Immediately, I hated the activity. Everybody is equal and the same but I have came to learn that there are just some things that guys can do better than girls and vice verse.
I agree that we are very different creatures but I still refuse to submit to the "fact" that guys are natural-born leaders and girls are naturally the followers. Let whoever is more qualified to ‘lead’ lead and the other will ‘follow’. It is also not unnatural that a female is the leader who wears the pants in the house as long as she knows how to honor and respect her husband, the kids will follow suit.
I think it is incredibly unfair to expect a woman to be a follower to a incompetent man. Imagine? The household would be chaotic!
Wife: Honey, we need to contact the mechanic to take a look at our refrigerator, it hasn’t been working properly for the past 2 months. All our food is getting stale!
Husband: (Distracted as watching wrestling on TV.) Okay I will call the cable guy later.
Wife: But honey, what has it got to do with the cable guy? It is our REFRIGERATOR that is faulty! It might as well be an oven!!!
Husband: What? Oh yes, I would like a beer darling. Make sure that its cold and fetch me some ice-cream while you are at it. Thanks!
However, if the man proves to be an excellent provider who is equip with superior leadership skills, everyone would gladly be his ‘followers’ and pay him the respect that he so rightly deserves. The bottom line is: be it the man or woman who wears the pants in the house, the family would turn out fine (as long as there is a good leader).
The reason I am penning all this is because I have had numerous discussions over this topic with my other half many many times. Although I came to see his point of view that men and women are different and there are just some things that one can do better than the other. Each have their individual role to play but I do not agree that it is unnatural for a woman to be the head of the family. If she is a better provider then be secure enough to recognize that and let her take the lead. As long as the couple honor and respect each other, there should be no reason why the children will not follow suit.
In my case, it is undeniable that my partner is a better (okay, far more superior) provider than I am and I have no problem following. I have came a long way to this point where I can recognize a leader and be the follower. (God, I still cringe whenever I term myself as that! Give me some time to get use to it… I have always envisioned myself as the team leader for 22 years!)
Had you asked me if I will submit to anyone and willingly be a follower to any man a year ago, I will not even acknowledge your question. Degrading is the word that I would apply to questions as such. The dick/ding dong/cock/penis is overrated but my willingly being a follower now has nothing to do with my gender. It just so happened that these tires have found an engine worthy enough to ‘follow’.
Will blog again. Ciao people.
